Another post about birth flowers from Perth Florist Funktionart. This month’s flower is the daffodil. According to http://www.birthflowersguide.com/

The daffodil is the March birth flower. Daffodils have the flower meaning of rebirth, respect, regard and unrequited love. The daffodil is one of the first flowers of spring, therefore it is a symbol of rebirth. The March birth flower, daffodil, is the common English name for all narcissus plants.

The name daffodil is a derivitave of affodell, which is a variant of asphodel. The Latin name for the daffodil is narcissus. Narcissus are also referred to as jonquils in North America. The March birth flower is poisonous if eaten. The daffodil is the emblem of Wales and is worn on St David’s Day. For spring flowers the daffodil is one of the best bulbs to plant. As the daffodil is one of the first flowers of spring, it has the flower meaning of hope.

Daffodil commonly refers to narcissus with large trumpets, but may be used for all types of narcissus. The March birth flower daffodil that is commonly known, is yellow with a sweet frangrance. It is native to the mediterranean, but has been cultivated all over the world as a decorative plant. The daffodil is a perennial grown from a bulb. It can reach heights of two feet. The daffodil is a dependable spring flower and a favorite for its long life and colorful blooms. In England the daffodil birth flower is known as the lent lily because it blooms during lent.

Oops. We nearly didn’t get this one in. To be honest things have been a bit busy recently, as any Perth Florist will tell you this is a busy time of year.

Anyway this month’s birth flower is the iris. According to www.birthflowersguide.com:

The February birth flower is the iris. The warm, deep color of the iris is a harbringer of the luxuries of spring, as we know February has long been a month known for romance and love. The iris comes a few colors including cool blue and snowy white, remembrances of winter. The iris flower meaning are faith, wisdom, and hope. The iris is a beautiful and meaningful gift. An alternate February birth flower is the violet.

There are hundreds of species of the February birth flower, the iris. The iris is a perennial herb. An iris can be grown from a creeping rhizomes or a bulb. The bulb is usually used in drier climates. The iris has been valued since ancient times. There is a flower on the sphinx in Egypt believed to be an iris. Another iris appears on a bas-relief from the 28th Egyptian Dynasty. In ancient times iris roots were used in perfume and medicine. The fleur-de-lis is a stylized iris, which was used much in heraldry. The February birth flower, iris, is Greek for “rainbow”.

The carnation is a pretty birth flower that can be dyed in any color. Carnations have a pleasant smell unlike some cut flowers with no frangrance. Worldwide, the carnation is the top producing crop in floriculture. The carnation also known as dianthus, sweet william, pinks, and maiden pink. This January birth flower is derived from Greek words that mean “flower of the gods”. The carnation has many meanings depending on the color it takes. A white carnation has the flower meaning of friendship, a pink one romance, red carnation for love, striped carnation for refusal and yellow for disdain. On Mother’s Day wear a pink carnation to honor a living mother, or a white carnation to remember a mother that has passed on.

The carnation is a very ornamental plant. It is widely cultivated in the flower garden. This January birth flower is grown commercially in France for its oil. The latin name for carnation is dianthus which means “divine flower”. The carnation is a tall flower growing one to three feet high. The carnation plant usually has many lightly smelling sweet blossoms. The carnation is used by some for protection, strength and healing. In Spain the carnation is the main flower in many religious celebraitons and national festivals.

Valentine’s Day – every florist will tell you that their briskest trade is on and around 14 February. So, what has the martyrdom of a 3rd century Roman priest to do with romantic love and why do we celebrate his death with the gift of flowers and chocolates? The answer is a combination of chance events.

The most commonly believed story is that of a Roman priest called Valentine who secretly married soldiers to their sweet-hearts against the will of the emperor. He was subsequently put to death, but no before he wrote a note to his own sweet-heart signed “your Valentine”. This story, while romantic, is undoubtedly apocryphal, but there may be a kernel of truth.

The Catholic Church recognises numerous martyrs called Valentine. Under 14 February a saint named Valentine is listed as martyred in Africa. By coincidence the Ancient Romans celebrated a fertility festival known as Lupercalia between 13 and 15 February. It is quite likely that in an effort to Christianise Lupercalia the Church set a commemorative feast on that date – the feast of St.Valentine.

However, while fertility and Valentine were now linked there appears to be no reference to romantic love or sentiment until the 14th Century when Geoffrey Chaucer, in a Parlement of Foules,

“For this was on seynt Volantynys day

Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make.”

What is certain, given the time of year that birds in the Nothern Hemisphere mate, is that Chaucer wasn’t referring to our Valentine, however, it seems to have stuck. Valentine’s Day is mentioned by Charles d’Orléans in a letter sent from the Tower of London in 1415 and by Shakespeare in Hamlet in 1600.

By the late 18th Century the practice of sending a Valentine among the more leisurely classes was well established and by the mid-19th Century the first mass produced paper Valentines were being made.

The modern popularity of Valentine’s Day has seen estimates of 1 billion Valentines sent each year world-wide and, since the mid-20th Century the gift of flowers, chocolates and cards between lovers.

Last month I introduced the idea of birth flowers. December’s birth flower is the paper white.

The paperwhite narcissus is the December birth flower. Legend states that after Narcissus died, Apollo turned him into the flower narcissus. Paperwhites are grown from bulbs and are native to the Mediterranean. They are very fragrant flowers and are frequently given as gifts at Christmas.

The paperwhite narcissus is a cousin to the daffodil flower. This flower is easy to force bloom indoors. The strong scent is either loved or hated. The paperwhite is the only narcissus variety that does not require a cold and dark period to bloom. The paperwhite is the most popular variety of narcissus. This flower means that the recipient of the paperwhites is sweet.

The above is taken from http://www.birthflowersguide.com/. The story of Narcissus is one of the creation myths of Greek mythology. Narcissus is depicted as proud and unfeeling and rejects those that love him, including the nymph Echo. Who once rejected pined away until only her voice remained. Nemesis heard Echo and punished Narcissus by making him fall in love with his reflection in a pool. Where he died and the god Apollo turned him into a flower. This is, of course, from where the term narcissistic derives.
